Just a sweet wholesome - and a little goofy - scene where Theo see's you wear your glasses for the first time.
An: I myself wear glasses and went through the I can only assume universal years of feeling unconfident in them. I'm a happy glasses wearer now but my own bf helped my confidence and when i saw this quote from this Tumblr post here (I think last year honestly) I knew i wanted to write some sweet for the glasses pals 🥹🌟
Warnings: The picture provided does not represent the readers looks in anyway. Indicates f!reader from the quote, but don't think I specify gender. No other, just cute fluff. Word count: 1200
The last of the students file alongside you with haste as you make way towards your seat for charms. Sliding yourself onto the long bench, you settle, fixing your disarranged tie and carefully smoothing your hair down as you wait for class to begin. Flitwick announces his presence with the scrapes of chalk on the board and you lift your head, instantly squinting at the blurred vision before you.
A silent curse to yourself with the quick realisation sinking in that you had forgotten to insert your contacts and cannot make out Flitwick's cursive. Favourably, you always made sure to carry your glasses with you as an absolute backup, but a seeping dread and apprehension surges in your chest at the thought of needing to wear them.
Having no choice, you begrudgingly grab them from your bag and slide the frames onto your face, your vision correcting instantly. You pray no one pays enough attention to confidently point them out, leaning your head in your hand in extra effort to hide yourself, glad when your hair falls, creating more of a shield. But of course, the one person you wished wouldn’t notice does.
Theo, often your desk neighbour who had also been running late, slides into the seat beside you, his head snapping down to the way you're sitting. His eyes trail over you as they usually do, before stopping to rest on the frames perched on your nose. His expression is nothing more than a mere eyebrow raise at the new accessory, though his gaze doesn’t falter despite the class beginning.
Sensing the lingering stares from Nott, you raise your head, glancing at him, reactively lifting your glasses to rest on your head in a moment of embarrassment. The once clear views of the handsome boy in front of you vanishes at your worsening site, and a deep chuckle leaves him when you squint instinctively.
“Huh, didn’t know you were blind as a bat.” His face resorts back to his signature resting face, a small smile peeking through his casual manner. “Cute bat nevertheless.”
Scoffing lightly at his cheeky compliment, your hands lift, covering your face, trying to hide your obvious flustering. “Shut up Nott, and quit staring. It’s rude.” Lowering your gaze back to your notes and ignoring the rush of heat sweltering within your body, leaving you feeling nervous.
Theo makes no endeavor to listen, deep eyes taking in every expression your face changes through. He feels lost, spiraling down a hypnotizing well as he drowns in your beauty. He’s drawn by the glasses that seem to enhance your elegance, watching you lower the specs. His lips curl wider. “Ah ha. This makes so much sense ya know.”
“What does?” Quirking your head in curiosity, your brows furrowing.
His face shifts, exposing his adorable, charming toothy grin, one of your favourite features of him. “This is why you’ve never hit on me isn’t it. You haven’t been able to see how hot I am. Merlin, look at what you’ve been missing out on.” He whispers, emphasizing his face moving his hands in a circle before he runs a hand through his hair. His eyes meet yours with an impudent gleam, raising a brow in a sarcastic manner that he’s right.
Rolling your eyes, attempting to hide the smile stretching onto your face, you snort. “Theo I wear contacts, you idiot.” You continue focusing on Flitwork's work, looking away from Theo momentarily, giving you time to breathe. “Stupid contacts,” you mutter under your breath, irritation laced in your tone.
A quiet chuckle escapes him while he studies you, noticing the clear insecurity you're projecting about your eyewear and his heart softens. Here you were worried and anxious about how you looked in your cute glasses, while he thought you’d never looked more beautiful. He’s struggling to wrap his head around why you seem so bothered, asking his next question quietly with a genuine interest, “Why don’t you ever wear them?”
Theo’s soft and calm tone surprises you, making you raise a brow, heartbeat speeding up, skin sweltering as he continues his wanderlust stare. “I don’t like them.” You mumble nervously, gazing back down, feeling your insecurity grow. A gentle caress brings your gaze back up to him, and he studies your features again, but closer.
It’s a very intimate moment for the middle of class, your body becoming flustered staring into Theo’s ocean orbs. You always had a hard time giving him direct eye contact, finding yourself melting into a puddle. They held you captivated, saying so much with such little emotion.
Everyone is always comparing them to the ocean, and they were right, not even just for the colour but for how they always acted. His gaze could switch from calm to stormy in a matter of seconds, always so unpredictable, just like the weather.
His gaze holds a truth to them, while you’re getting lost in his eyes he can’t help but mirror your actions. The colours and emotion swirling in them make it hard to look away, he feels trapped while he flickers between the contrast of your iris and the frames of your glasses.
“But you’ve got them framed now, like a piece of art. Nothing could be more beautiful.”
Nothing could have prepared you for what he just said, your mouth parting in a state of awe, that the infamous Theodore nott could even hold such amazement for you. Gaping at him, you struggle to absorb his compliment.
Did he just compliment your glasses to art, something that should be marveled at? A piece of work that is admired by many. You can’t help the way your body flushes and the smile that creeps as you gaze at him appreciatively. No one has ever complimented you in such a way, and so casually. “Really?”
He watches in sweet amusement, a swell of pride blooming in his chest, watching your face light up. A glow of pure happiness takes over your features, and he swears you’ve never looked prettier. He finds himself matching your smile, tucking a piece of hair behind your ear, keeping his voice quiet to not disturb the class. “I wouldn’t lie to an angel.”
You’ve never found yourself so flustered before, feeling the heat migrate over your body, looking away from him momentarily. He laughs, breaking the romantic moment and you relax, relishing in the natural manner between you two falling back in. He leans back into the booth, smirking, “you should wear them more often. I like the idea of sitting beside literal art.”
Rolling your eyes but grinning again at his compliments, the idea that he likes you for you is making your heart swell hopefully. “And I get to see you all flustered like this, it’s adorable. It’s just spec-tactular, don’t you think?”
Snorting a little too loud at his glasses pun you draw the attention of your professor, and he decides now to call on you for a question. Your face flushes in embarrassment at the extreme awareness that now is looking at you and your alternative eyewear.
Theo chuckles quietly once you answer and shrink back in your seat, glaring at him. He can’t help but continue his annoying and starting-to-seem-endless supply of eye related puns. “Hey now, don’t lash out at me, don’t lose sight of what’s important. You're a real vision.”
The rest of class speeds by in a blur, with Theo never shutting up and your eyes unable to stop rolling, but with a small grin that’s unable to leave your face. Your mind can’t stop replaying his original moment of sweetness and, surprisingly, you feel a new growth of confidence has spurred. You’re seeing a whole new perspective with him.

please expand on the lancelot x gawain i keep seeing on your blog 🙏
okay sorry i took so long i decided to shower after you sent me this because i knew that if i started then i would never end up showering today. and then it was an unfinished routine so i had to lotion and brush my teeth and floss and do hair stuff too.
so, obviously, it's lancelot du lac and gawaine of orkney. both knights of the round table, etc etc. you know who they are. i hope. they're not exactly similar to their bbc merlin counterparts---lancelot is of noble birth in classic arthuriana, gawaine is arthur's nephew (though bbc merlin doesn't exactly...keep the familial relations that canon does), things like that---but i'd honestly say that their character personalities are similar enough that it's verging on acceptable! just as a reference point for you, i suppose.
gawaine has lost a fair fight only to six knights in his time, launcelot being one of them (Le Morte d'Arthur, Sir Thomas Mallory. book IV, chapter XVIII) (the other five being sir tristram, sir bors, sir percevel, sir pelleas, and sir marhaus). he is mentioned to throw fights against lancelot because he loves losing to him (cannot remember the source for the life of me) and, of course, lancelot always notices when he does.
then there's this famous quote:
(vulgate II, p140) where launcelot tells galehaut (another man that he arguably has...something...going on with) that he would share with gawaine everything he loves, save guinevere, in order to have gawaine forever. gawaine then goes on to say that, essentially, he would wish to be the most beautiful woman so that lancelot would love him as a wife.
also, in Morte, which i don't have photos of because my copy is a physical book rather than a pdf like how i'm reading vulgate and i don't want to take photos with my laptop camera. there is this quote "and Launcelot with this sword shall slay the man that in the world he loves best, that shall be Sir Gawaine." which is engraved in the hilt of the red hilted sword, balin's sword that merlin encases in stone and which galahad, lancelot's son, eventually wields.
^this, also. from vulgate IV, p140. after launcelot accidentally kills gawaine's brother gareth (named here as gaheriet; all the orkneys have...many ways of spelling their names. look up a list of all of gawaine's names over history, i dare you) who was guarding guinevere's cell...he begs gawaine to forgive him and even promises to swear himself and all his men into subservience to gawaine if gawaine would only forgive him. "I want to be your companion just as I used to be." mhm...
and "I'll swear to you on 'relics that I didn't kill your brother Gaheriet intentionally" is a huge promise. swearing on a holy relic in such a deeply, fundamentally christian society was the vow that you could make. the reason why honour was so important in that time was because the grand majority of people were illiterate, so one's word was the most one could give, in the majority of situations! and here is lancelot, saying that he'll swear on a holy relic that he did not mean to kill gareth if it means gawaine will forgive him and love him again.
there is also, right before gawaine eventually dies (from a sword wound to the head from lancelot) he writes a letter to launcelot begging forgiveness for having been so horrible to lancelot before his death, and wishing he could see him before he dies, for he knows he won't live long.
And then when paper and ink was brought, then Gawaine was set up weakly by King Arthur, for he was shriven a little to-fore; and then he wrote thus, as the French book maketh mention: Unto Sir Launcelot, flower of all noble knights that ever I heard of or saw by my days, I, Sir Gawaine, King Lot's son of Orkney, sister's son unto the noble King Arthur, send thee greeting, and let thee have knowledge that the tenth day of May I was smitten upon the old wound that thou gavest me afore the city of Benwick, and through the same wound that thou gavest me I am come to my death-day. And I will that all the world wit, that I, Sir Gawaine, knight of the Table Round, sought my death, and not through thy deserving, but it was mine own seeking; wherefore I beseech thee, Sir Launcelot, to return again unto this realm, and see my tomb, and pray some prayer more or less for my soul. And this same day that I wrote this cedle, I was hurt to the death in the same wound, the which I had of thy hand, Sir Launcelot; for of a more nobler man might I not be slain. Also Sir Launcelot, for all the love that ever was betwixt us, make no tarrying, but come over the sea in all haste, that thou mayst with thy noble knights rescue that noble king that made thee knight, that is my lord Arthur; for he is full straitly bestead with a false traitor, that is my half-brother, Sir Mordred; and he hath let crown him king, and would have wedded my lady Queen Guenever, and so had he done had she not put herself in the Tower of London. And so the tenth day of May last past, my lord Arthur and we all landed upon them at Dover; and there we put that false traitor, Sir Mordred, to flight, and there it misfortuned me to be stricken upon thy stroke. And at the date of this letter was written, but two hours and a half afore my death, written with mine own hand, and so subscribed with part of my heart's blood. And I require thee, most famous knight of the world, that thou wilt see my tomb. And then Sir Gawaine wept, and King Arthur wept; and then they swooned both. And when they awaked both, the king made Sir Gawaine to receive his Saviour. And then Sir Gawaine prayed the king for to send for Sir Launcelot, and to cherish him above all other knights. (Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Thomas Mallory. book XXI, chapter II)
(vulgate IV, p139). honestly? no comment here. it speaks for itself. this bit is where the ship name remarkable comes from.
of course, this is by no means a comprehensive post, just moments i can remember off the top of my head. and a lot of this can be attributed to today's view of male homosociality and how it's changed since the middle ages, skewing our view of what could have been, by all means, a platonic relationship. however it is my personal belief and interpretation that they were in love <3 muah the end i hope you enjoyed. i tried my best to explain both story and cultural context the best i could without going into irrelevant detail...i hope this is enough!

Divorces and Teddy Bears—Watchthrough Thoughts
I’m not sure if anyone likes reading these, but I do, and I figure I can’t be the only one, so here we go. (Plus, they’re fun to make.)
The little card and “beginning-middle-end” editing is amazing
The presents in the title card being addressed to “Peter Steven”, “Priscilla”, and “Johnny and Janae”??????? They know their fanbase; I died
I love this stage
Also captions!!!
I love Luke being so confused at the beginning and just going “Oh!” when he gets it
“I was dressed as a sheep” ah, taking lessons from Sam, are we?
AJ’s sassy walk!!!!!!!
Okay I love Mrs. Claus holy shit
“Leave the keys in the sled, yes. So I can start the engine of the sled.” I love it when Sam points out logic flaws without even breaking character (although I also love it when he breaks character too)
Poor Snowdrop, being assigned as the child of divorce and forced into the middle
Also Luke’s hair???? He looks amazing
The camera quality is great as well
“We feed directly on your emotions. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” Luke????
Congrats to Luke for finally getting his diagnosis!
Also Luke directing the audience to cheer for him and then to stop is amazing (reminds me a bit of that clip of him getting the room to be quiet in that recent Genre game)
Tom changing the scene just to crouch behind the chair… This caught me so off guard (in the best way possible)
I know someone already said this but Little Krampus has huge Scottish Robin vibes
Also I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: how the FUCK does Tom move like that?
Tom stroking at a strand of Luke’s hair like that is so weird and I’m here for it; Tom’s character choices are always top-notch
I think “sassy women who fly to warm places to cheat on their husbands with men called Javier” is my favourite niche sub-genre of AJ character (insert that thing about nickels and things happening twice) (shoutout to Tracy) (also I know that Tracy didn’t canonically sleep with Javier but like… she totally did, right?) (or with a different Javier) (there are always plenty of Javiers available in the SFTHverse) (and she has been fucking everyone (direct quote from her))
I love it when AJ fucks up some tiny, barely-significant thing and Sam just CANNOT let it go and it becomes an actual plot point
AJ’s passport photo poses are gorgeous
“The most wanted terrorist in the North Pole” Jesus Christ Sam
Also tangent but can I just say that AJ wearing friendship bracelets is everything (and am I right in saying that I think those were the ones made by fans? Or am I misremembering? Because if they are that is so fucking sweet)
Now I really want to learn more about the Great Battle
Sassy Tom!!!! I love sassy Tom
The Sam and Luke elves remind me of the Oompa Loompas from West End Big Boys
I love Luke’s determination to climb on Sam and Sam’s determination to prevent it
“~Rudolph motherfucker~” have I mentioned that I love AJ?
Audience to the rescue!
“Initiating micro-space” AJ???
Javier having basically all of his buttons undone… Xavier flashbacks, anyone? (Also, Tom having basically all of his buttons undone… he definitely remembers the latest DnD livestream)
“I was expecting a sexy lady with a big beard” hell yeah, bearded women!
“Is [having your shirt unbuttoned] the local custom?” “No, only when we are awaiting a lover. Which, again, you are not; you are two children.” I love that Tom has to remind Sam to not unbutton his shirt because… it’s Sam
“My manservant was surprised” one, of course Javier had a manservant, and two, they need to stop making me think of BBC Merlin because it kills me every single fucking time
Luke just casually telling this random man that he’s 2000 years old… god, they really do never leave the North Pole, do they?
“Tell me a little less” I love Tom
“I’m definitely the receiver in the relationship” TOM (but also good for Javier)
AJ oh my fucking god
“That’s how it works up there” god I love Sam’s very specific “suspension of disbelief” voice
“That looks like a plot point that’s almost been abandoned” Tom is amazing
Oh, Luke, you’ve just set yourself up for another Pocket scenario
“I just wanted the pussy” Tom
“You know it’s casual” does she? Because she’s moving halfway around the world for him
“Wow, that sounds very transactional to me” I mean… yeah. Yeah, it does
“Hey, let’s not blame someone with a disorder, shall we?” I love Sam holy shit
Tom singing!!!!!!!!!!!! He sounds so creepy??????? He’s doing an amazing job
“~I just realised there’s no cable on this mic at all~” Tom has been freed!
Oh my god I love seeing Tom so happy
Tom’s villains are always amazing for a lot of reasons but especially his physicality???
Tom is having so much fun
AJ’s expression when Tom puts their faces close together is amazing; it’s like, “I have no idea what the fuck you’re doing but I’m going with it”
“Poor little teddy bear Christmas man.” I love Tom trying to bring back the title (“I have so many names and that is not one of them”)
LUKE!!!! (his Little Krampus movements are amazing)
Also Snowdrop :(
AJ just staring blankly into the camera is so fucking creepy
Luke good fucking god
Thought we were going to get a kiss for a second there…
Sam singing!!!!
I love the audience singalongs!
AJ singing!!!!
Holy shit I love this play
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates!
#as always if anything I said comes across as a criticism that was not the intention#I absolutely adore this play#I think this is one of my new favourites#again I don’t know if anyone will read this or enjoy it#but I had a great time making it#shoot from the hip#sfth#Divorces and Teddy Bears#Nightshadow’s watchthrough thoughts

hi! i apologize if this is outside your ballpark. i recently came across a post about how religion appears in bbc's merlin and it got me thinking about religion in arthurian legend in general. i was wondering if you have any thoughts on the topic? what religions do the characters follow and how does it impact their lives? i know most of the 'cast' is christian but even then medieval christianity is different enough from modern christianity that i constantly feel like i'm missing some nuance/context when i read arthuriana. do other religions feature (such as judaism, islam, pagan spirituality) and are there any essays on it or books where that's explored? thank you for all you do and have a great day!
Hello!
So I’m definitely no religious scholar of any kind. Yet I somehow managed to write an obscenely long post in reply. I've provided copious amounts of literature on everything I'm discussing here, so I encourage anyone who sees this to read what's provided and form their own opinion. Although my reply is based on the Medieval stories I've read and quoted as well as the essays and books of people far more qualified than I am, it's still my own interpretation, and shouldn't be taken as the final word on this highly complex subject. If anyone finds something here I've gotten wrong, please don't hesitate to educate me otherwise and point me in a direction to learn more!
Without further ado...
The first thing anyone looking into this needs to understand is [most of] the Arthurian stories we have were drafted or documented by Christians, oftentimes monks (ie, people very devoted to their religion). Even the texts like the Mabinogion or The Welsh Triads, which contains no Christianity, wasn’t written down until the 12th century after the oral tradition had passed through the Christianizing of Britain. Not to mention translation bias, an oft overlooked factor. For example, French characters Lancelot and Galahad were retroactively added to The Welsh Triads to bring the Triads more in line with the widely popular French narrative. Translator Rachael Bromwich has excellent footnotes regarding this in the file I shared above. So just keep that in mind while reading/researching this subject.
More generally speaking, while some characters themselves aren’t Christian, such as Muslim Palomides or the occasional Jewish character, the texts are [mostly] from an overtly Islamphobic and antisemitic viewpoint. The depictions of religion in Medieval Arthuriana should never be taken as an indication of how things “really were,” either in the time it’s meant to take place (ie, the 5th-6th centuries when the Saxons were colonizing Britain) or the time/place it was written in (ie Chrétien de Troyes wrote from his own 12th century Breton perspective). Point being, it’s all very biased. Perception heavily depends on the place and year things were written and translated. If you're ever unsure which translation of a text will best suit your needs, whether that means accuracy, readability, or containing more robust footnotes, don't hesitate to ask.
That being said, the differences you’re touching on regarding Medieval versus Modern Christianity sometimes stems from Christian Mysticism, which was a prevalent theology in the Middle Ages and still exists today (albeit to a lesser degree). Some contemporary sources on this would be:
The Confessions by Saint Augustine of Hippo
The City of God by Saint Augustine of Hippo
The Book of Divine Works by Saint Hildegard von Bingen
The Letters of Hildegard von Bingen Volume I by Saint Hildegard von Bingen
The Letters of Hildegard von Bingen Volume II by Saint Hildegard von Bingen
The Book of Margery Kempe by Margery Kempe.
Now the thing with Christianity in history and Arthuriana is that the lines between orthodox practice and the mystical was blurred. On an episode about charms, the Medieval Podcast (also available on any podcasting platform like Spotify) explains how people bought and used charms all the time, even within their Christian practice. To them, it was a part of their worship. They may have chanted some words over a sick friend while anointing certain parts of the body in the hopes it would aid in healing. Depending on the time and place, this may or may not have been openly discussed for fear of repercussions or accusations of blasphemy, but it was common enough for historians to have gathered a multitude of examples preserved in spell books. To a desperate Medieval Christian, one of these charms occupied a similar place to Pray the Rosary or Hail Marys in hopes of boosting the success of their endeavor.
So in a similar vein, that concept is sometimes stretched for the sake of an Arthurian story. What you end up with are characters like Merlin, supposedly half-demon, but baptized, therefore his purified magic and prophesizing is considered "Christian;" Morgan le Fay, raised in a nunnery, yet learned necromancy from the holy sisters; and Gawain, who obtained his sun powers, as well as his name, from the hermit that baptized him. At least, so it goes in the Vulgate.
In a way, these people are not magical through their own power, but channeling the divine with the help of their Christian education in order to bestow those benefits, often health, strength, or prosperity related, onto others. (You'll see a lot of real life examples in the contemporary sources I linked above.) Vulgate editor Norris J. Lacy and his translation team left a footnote on the Gawain passage explaining the history of the Gawain/Gwalchmai character that lead me to theorize that this passage might be an attempt by Anonymous to maintain those heightened magical powers while offering a palatable Christian explanation for it.
A similar phenomenon can be seen in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the characters are staunchly Christian, and yet the presence of a green-skinned knight astride a green horse who can survive a beheading is seen as marvelous, even miraculous, rather than monstrous. As Larissa Tracy explains in the essay Shifting Skin Passing as Human Passing as Fay, although the Green Knight is Othered by the court, he's not so Othered as to be held entirely apart. He's "tallest of men" and "half a giant." He is still one of the "in" crowd at least a little bit. So while his green coloring shocks the court, and calls to mind Otherworldly fay, in a way similar to the Lady of the Lake or other such beings, the Green Knight isn't viewed as an enemy of the crown so much as a chance for the court to prove its virtue. In the end, this Green Knight was indeed a man, Sir Bertilak, transformed by Morgan le Fay to take on the monstrous visage, and was indeed "one of them" all along. In this way, concepts which seem magical (read: Pagan) to the modern reader remain steeped in Christian ideals. This extends to Gawain's pentacle shield as well, sometimes misconstrued with a similar Pagan symbol, which the poem outright states represents the five virtues of knighthood or even the five wounds of Jesus Christ. Then again, Rhonda Knight's essay All Dressed Up With Someplace to Go: Regional Identity argues the opposite point, that there is indeed a divide. Knight asserts that the poet has intentionally heightened the dichotomy of insider/outsider, particularly as it relates to the Anglo-Welsh border between Sir Bertilak's Wirral and King Arthur's London Camelot. It's quite plain from the moment the Green Knight enters the scene there's a stark split between the two cultures, whether that be interpreted as the people of Wales and the people of England, or the Otherworld associated with Wales and the dominance of Christianity.
But anyway enough about Christians. Let's talk about my friend Sir Palomides and Islam.
A brief recap for anyone who's unfamiliar with Sir Palomides, he's a Muslim knight, referred to in the Medieval Christian tongue as a "Saracen," who vows to convert to Christianity for the sake of marrying Isolde, but curiously hasn't yet. His father, Esclabor, and both of his younger brothers, Segwarides and Safir, have already converted. Palomides is continuously ostracized for his religion/appearance throughout the narrative and considered lesser than Tristan. This is pretty much always the roles they play. Sometimes Palomides is treated with extreme cruelty, such as in the Post-Vulgate, where Galahad forces him to convert to Christianity at sword point, only for Palomides to be murdered shortly afterward by Gawain once his narrative purpose, ie successful conversion, has been fulfilled.
For this break down, I'm ignoring that portrayal of Palomides as well as the Prose Tristan because they suffer from the issues I already outlined regarding Medieval Christian's malicious depiction of non-Christians. And I hate them</3 We'll be turning our attention to Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory instead as Palomides is slightly more nuanced there. (Very slightly. "The Good Saracen Sir Palomides" is a loaded sentiment, but Malory was a Medieval Englishman imprisoned for his crimes and writing through his madness. We work with what we have.) The copy I linked is translated by Dr. Dorsey Armstrong, not only because it's very good, but because she authored one of the essays I'll be sharing on the subject. She also has a 24 part lecture series on Arthuriana that I highly recommend.
In Le Morte d'Arthur, and the earlier published La Tavola Ritonda as well as Byelorussian Tristan, Palomides is treated a teensy bit better. In most versions of the story, Palomides misses an appointment to duel with Tristan out of cowardice or dishonor. But Malory has written a scenario in which Palomides missed the appointment not out of subservience to Tristan, but because he was jailed elsewhere and couldn't physically make it. He still gets his ass kicked by Tristan, but Malory's change shifts implicational blame of Palomides to circumstantial blame of his situation which serves to create a more sympathetic character. So while Tristan's perception of events remains the same, Palomides is given a narrative excuse which maintains his honor and integrity in the mind of the reader. Yet as Dr. Dorsey Armstrong points out in her essay, Postcolonial Palomides, after Tristan discovers Palomides suffering a bout of grief-induced madness, Palomides's ability to communicate breaks down, and Tristan is unable to understand him. Palomides occupies a space that his fellow "Saracen" knights, such as Priamus of Tuscany, don't. He's Othered by everyone in the narrative yet gains renown among the Christian knights in part because of his extreme desire to join the Round Table, while resisting the necessity to conform to a religious order and community which does not otherwise accept him. Unlike his father and brothers, Palomides seems more aware of, and resistant to, the predatory systems which dictate their conditional acceptance.
Race as a concept did not exist in the Medieval world, rather it was intrinsically tied to religion. That said, colorism was always present. "Saracen" is a term used to refer to Arab people, but according to Hamed Suliman Abuthawabeh, the etymology of the word itself stems from the color brown, ie referential of skin tone. As it relates to fiction... Ever wonder why the Holy Land of the Middle East in Arthurian Legend, where Galahad, Perceval, and Bors seek the grail, is called "Sarras?" Now you know. This concept is not limited to Middle Eastern characters either. Black people in Medieval stories are referred to as "Moorish," ie from the "Moorlands." To that end, ever wonder why Aglovale's half-Black son is named "Morien?" Or how about Parzival's half-Black brother Feirefiz, who's described as having a mixture of "white and black skin," half his father's "fair country Anjou," half his mother's "heathen land Zassamank" with a face two-toned "as a magpie." (Author Wolfram von Eschenbach and translator Jessie Weston's words, not mine).
The fact is non-white, non-Christian characters are often reduced to their skin color, not only in what labels are applied to them as people, but their religions and falsified homelands as well. The cost of a modicum of respect is total assimilation. It's all or nothing for these characters, and even then, it's not a guarantee. Aside from the especially harrowing treatment of Palomides in the Post-Vulgate, this concept appears yet again in the poem The Turk and Sir Gawain, in which Gawain continuously oscillates between foe and friend with an unnamed Turkish knight, only to conclude the story by violently converting this individual through beheading. The Turkish knight is reborn, now Christian, and at last gains a name and identity, Sir Gromer. The expectation put on Pagan knights is so great they must submit to their white comrades and allow them to, literally, kill their former selves to be worthy of personhood in Christendom.
The same can be said of Jewish characters in Arthurian Legend. They're not often the focal point, but they do pop up from time to time. In La Tavola Ritonda, there's Dialantes the Jewish giant, as well as the beautiful Hebrew damsel of Aigua della Spina, who's curiously married to a Christian knight. Then of course there's the rampant antisemitism in Chrétien de Troyes's Perceval, as well as the continuations, which blame "the treacherous Jews" for killing Christ, while also casting Joseph of Arimathea as a Christian knight who brought the Holy Grail to Britain. Furthermore in The History of the Grail portion of the Vulgate, Joe is said to have "converted to the faith of Jesus Christ" while keeping it secret for fear that "the Jews would have killed him." Tons of revisionism happening. The bulk of the Vulgate makes little to no mention of Jewish people, good or bad, as it's mostly tied to the grail story. That said, when it does come up again in The Death of Arthur, it's a slippery slope into every other prejudice, as the term has become synonymous with evil, particularly as it relates to women.
I couldn't possibly outline the entirety of Medieval Christianity's relationship with other religions in a single tumblr post. Here's a link to my huge folder about Race & Religion in the Middle Ages. The essays and books there discuss this subject in a general sense but there's a sub-folder with Arthurian specific essays to learn more about Palomides, Priamus, Gromer, Morien, Feirefiz, and other characters or texts that touch on race/religion.
Despite all of the above, it's not all bad. Sometimes an author was anti-racist toward the non-Christian characters, yet limited by their time. (Think how Herman Melville portrayed Polynesian Queequeg in Moby Dick, positively, but used phrenology to compliment the shape of his skull by comparing him to that of white people. Not up to modern standards, but an attempt at progressive for its time nonetheless.) Looking at Dutch Arthuriana, while Morien's name is an insensitive indication of his unnamed "Moorish" mother, the only characters in the story who treat Morien poorly, such as the boatmen who refuse to ferry him, are openly condemned, even threatened, by the Knights of the Round Table, including Gareth.
I don't know what to call this writing technique, but it's used (and sometimes underutilized...) today. Essentially, as a means to indicate to the reader that the views of the antagonistic (in this case, xenophobic and anti-Black) character isn't shared by the author, they include another character who refutes and combats the negative behavior and who accepts the oppressed party as they are. However rare, it does happen in Medieval texts.
Last but not least, I'd be remiss to omit the Hebrew King Artus from this discussion. It's an incomplete story, but sets out to retell the Arthurian Legend from a Jewish standpoint. All the characters are Jewish and all religious allusions that were once Christian have been rewritten as Jewish. It has a thorough analysis by the translator and tons of footnotes to indicate the Jewish references throughout the text.
Regarding religion in modern Arthuriana like BBC Merlin, Druids aren't actually present in the Legends, with the one and only exception being The Adventure of Melóra and Orlando, which does refer to Merlin as a Druid! There's also the connection made between Merlin and Stonehenge in The History of the King's of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth; the word "Druid" is not used, but Merlin describes his own ability to manipulate the stones as "mystical." One has to remember that Druids didn't write down their own history, as it was their way to memorize religious practices and not document anything. All we know about them comes from outside sources, such as Greeks and Romans as well as Christian missionaries come to convert them. As Christianity took hold and figures like Saint Patrick "drove the snakes [Druids] out of Ireland," much of that history was either lost or purposefully maligned. Did the Druids actually participate in human sacrifice? Who knows! Bearing that in mind, we must acknowledge the influence of the several revivals of Druidism and recent boom in Neopaganism; a lot of popular interpretations of Arthurian Legend are just that, the creator's interpretation, and not necessarily indicative of what the historical people would have been doing. To learn more about that, there's Druids: A Very Short Introduction by Barry Cunliffe which I found helpful.
When it comes to Merlin, or Myrddin Wyllt, his character is potentially based on a few different people who really existed, but there isn't a name given to whatever religion they practiced in anything I've read. While the time period did have clearly delineated religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Zoroastrianism (and then Islam), Mithraism, Druidism, etc, there were just as many people who prayed to Jesus Christ while simultaneously leaving out offerings for the local spirits. Most religions come with regional differences, various sects, or shift gradually over time. Saint Patrick himself is said to have had a "fluid identity," as his autobiographical work The Confessions paints him in a fairly positive light as a peaceful missionary, while Dr. Janina Ramirez indicates in her book The Private Life of Saints that other sources characterize Saint Patrick as an aggressor. Some scholars even believe Saint Patrick may have been two different people, combined over the centuries, similarly to Myrddin Wyllt. Modern Arthurian books and shows really lean into a dichotomy between Christianity and the "Old Religion" for the sake of entertainment. But bouts of unrest weren't as fantastical nor made up of two wholly separate, well-defined teams.
Wow this got long. I think we'll leave it at that. I hope that answers your questions! Take care!

Tell us more about the Sweary Dad Harry fic :)
Hi anon! Thanks for the ask! This is one of the fics that I was writing together with a friend, it was supposed to be a gift fic for a friend's birthday, but life got in the way and we never finished it. We did have a whole lot of fun with it though, and wrote over 6k, but I fear it may never be completed 😭.
The premise is that Harry swears a lot (hence the title of the doc). He and Draco recently moved in together with their respective children, so its a blended family. He uses muffling charms when he rants but they don't always work the best (and the kids are sneaky listeners). The main thrust of the story centres around the children trying to come up with a spell or charm to clean up Harry's language in time for an important family event, and they manage to do that... with quite interesting results. It's mostly from teenager James Potter's POV so it's a bit of a kid!fic, but a few sections are in Harry or Draco POV. Here's a snippet from Draco POV: (C.R.A.P. stands for Crime Reporting and Procedures) ~
Draco placed a hand on Harry’s hot cheek and thumbed across his cheekbone. “What was it about this time?”
“Bastard called me in to give me feedback on an arsing report that he asked me to write—at the last fucking minute, by the way—as a favour for that knobhead McMillan who’s off work with the shits supposedly. Why he can’t just take an Agrimony potion like the rest of us is beyond me, but what the fuck would I know, and anyway the less said about him the better. And then Robards had the bloody nerve to say I’d bollocksed it up, that I’d included too much irrelevant information,” and here Harry did air quotes and pulled a sarky face, “and didn't include enough detail about the actual case.” Air quotes again. “He took great fucking pleasure, the bastard, in telling me that the C.R.A.P. guidelines do not include any requirements for a description of the victim’s dog or what type of biscuits they served me."
Mercifully, Harry took a breath. "‘Well, I’m so fucking sorry’ I said, ‘if my attempts to foster some sort of rapport with the elderly before I pump them for fucking information regarding a terrifying and traumatic event are not noteworthy, but it’s my useless prick of a partner who usually writes this stuff up, while I do all the actual buggering work!”—Harry threw his hands up in obvious exasperation—“And yeah anyway, it was at that point he told me I'd be getting a written warning, the absolute cock, and that I was off the New Forest coven case. Giving it to Snodbury and Patil. Can you believe that wanker?”
“Oh, Harry,” Draco soothed, reeling at the Bombarda of information he’d just been hit with, not to mention the sheer amount of swear words Harry was capable of cramming into a single sentence. “And you were so close to solving that case. Weren’t you supposed to be travelling up there tomorrow?”
“Yeah, supposed to be. Fuck’s sake. And screw him to hell and back if he thinks I’m going into the office tomorrow to do shitty admin. I’ll be taking a duvet day, and he can f—”
“I can’t understand why you don’t quit, Harry. You’re so miserable in that department. Honestly, we don’t need the money. And I keep telling you, you could do anything you wanted to, anything at all. You’re Harry Potter, for Merlin’s sake, you’d—”
“Of fuck off with the Harry Potter Chosen One bollocks. I like helping people, serving the community.” He crossed his arms, scowling, but Draco could tell he was simmering down. “I just don’t like the bureaucracy and pettiness.”
“Alright, I understand that. I really do. But you don’t need to swear at me too. And much as I hate to harp on at you about your strong language, I’m starting to get quite a bit concerned about Sunday when you’ll need to impress your godson’s girlfriend and her parents. Molly had a word with me too, and—”
“What?” Harry said, pushing off from the kitchen counter, “You’ve been speaking to Molly about me?”
“She was just worried. We all need to be on our best behaviour, Teddy is so anxious for this to go well. You know he’s working up to asking her to move in with him, and her parents won’t allow it if they don’t approve of him and the way he’s been brought up.”
Harry scowled. “What’s wrong with the way he’s been brought up?”
“Nothing, Harry, you know I don’t mean it like that. You’ve done an amazing job, and Teddy is a fantastic person. It’s just the optics of it, how it will reflect on Teddy. Teddy explained it all to us—how prudish and prim they are.”
“I did my best for him. Merlin, I was barely even an adult myself when Andromeda fell ill.”
“I know that. We all know that. And I know too that you don’t mean to be coarse, but you get so passionate about things. I love you for it, love how deeply you feel emotions, but I don’t think Mr and Mrs Cockington-Titsmarsh will feel the same way. Merlin, when you say 'fuck' every third word, even I struggle to make out what you’re trying to tell me, so think how they’ll fare.”
“I’ve tried, Draco, damn it. I really have. I just can’t think of better ways to phrase things when I’m riled up. And it feels good to let it out with some bad words. Really good. It helps... I think.”
“I know. And you’re absolutely right, it’s a proven stress-release, at least according to The Quibbler. It can be good for you, in fact. It’s just… well, you know as well as I do it’s been spilling over at inappropriate times, and being mopped up by innocent ears.”
“You don’t need to remind me,” Harry grumbled, face flushing.
“And I’ve told you I can help come up with some cutting put-downs and insults that are squeaky clean in polite company. It’s my job to wrangle words and make them suitable for little ears.”
“Yeah I know.” Harry looked sheepish. “By the way, I used that one you told me the other day in the canteen at lunch: ‘Robards has the personality of Voldemort but without any of the charm’. It made Susan giggle for a good minute.”
“You see. You can do it. And yes, just like Voldemort was, Robards is one of those people whose personality would be enormously improved by death.”
Harry gasped in feigned shock. “Stealing that one, too.”

A Battle of Clinginess
Pairing: Sirius Black X Reader, Regulus Black X Platonic!Reader
You had always known the Black brothers were competitive—one could say it ran in the family. But you hadn’t anticipated that their rivalry would manifest in such… unique ways when it came to you.
You and Sirius had been dating for a few months now, and everything had been going wonderfully—until Regulus found out. The moment he learned you and Sirius were an item, he was, to put it lightly, not pleased.
And so, it began.
One evening in the Gryffindor common room, you sat on the couch, curled up with a book, trying to finish a chapter before the evening’s study session. Sirius had found you first, of course, and made himself comfortable next to you, immediately leaning his head on your shoulder, his arm draped around you.
“Are you reading without me?” Sirius mumbled, pouting slightly as he peered down at your book.
“Not without you,” you teased, placing a bookmark in your novel and turning to face him. “Just… you know, trying to finish this one chapter.”
“Liar,” he said dramatically, flicking his messy hair out of his eyes. “I know when you're avoiding me.”
You laughed, running your fingers through his hair affectionately. “I’m not avoiding you, Pads. I’m just—”
But before you could finish, a voice cut through the air, smooth and slightly condescending.
“Well, well, well. What have we here?” Regulus stood in the doorway, leaning casually against the frame, his dark eyes flickering from you to Sirius.
Sirius immediately sat up straighter, the playful smile on his face fading into something more competitive. "Reg, what are you doing here?"
“Oh, you know,” Regulus said, walking over to the couch, his gaze flicking to you briefly, “I was just looking for my best friend. But it seems like she’s very comfortable over here.” He gave Sirius a pointed look before sitting down next to you, deliberately making himself just a little closer than Sirius had been. “I thought we were supposed to study together tonight, Y/N.”
You blinked, caught in the middle of this unspoken battle. “Reg, we studied yesterday, and I—”
“You know,” Regulus said smoothly, eyes glinting, “I think I deserve more time with you anyway, considering I’m your best friend, not him.”
Sirius shot up from his spot, glaring at Regulus. “Excuse me? I’m her boyfriend. So, unless you plan on having this conversation somewhere else, I think it’s me who deserves her attention.”
You watched with wide eyes as the two brothers, who could never seem to agree on anything, practically glared at each other over your head. You sighed dramatically, throwing your arms up in exasperation. “Okay, both of you, stop!”
Regulus raised an eyebrow. “What? Did I hit a nerve?”
Sirius folded his arms. “If anyone’s hitting nerves, it’s you.”
“Well, I was here first,” Regulus said with a smug grin.
Sirius made a show of looking pointedly at you. “She was just with me.”
“Technically,” Regulus mused, leaning back against the couch with a relaxed smirk, “she’s been my best friend longer, which means—”
“Oh for Merlin’s sake,” you groaned, rubbing your temples. “You’re both acting like children.”
Sirius leaned closer to you, his hand on your leg, clearly not willing to let Regulus get any closer. “You’re right. I’m sorry, babe.” He turned to Regulus with an exaggeratedly sweet smile. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to steal her away for a bit. We were having a moment.”
“You’ve been having a moment for the past two months,” Regulus shot back, not missing a beat. “You’re welcome to continue your ‘moment,’ but Y/N and I are going to—”
“—have a study session,” you interrupted, making air quotes as you shot them both a pointed look. “Guys, can we please just agree that I’m not some sort of prize for either of you to fight over?”
They both blinked, looking momentarily guilty. But that didn’t last long.
“I’m just saying,” Regulus continued, “if you didn’t keep sneaking off with her, maybe I’d get a little more time to talk to her.”
Sirius scoffed. “Are you blaming me for being a good boyfriend?”
“You don’t need to be so clingy all the time,” Regulus retorted, his voice taking on a teasing lilt. “I’m sure Y/N doesn’t mind a little personal space.”
“Reg, you’re the one who keeps hovering over her,” Sirius shot back. “I can’t even sit next to her without you coming in and trying to steal her attention.”
You stared between them, feeling the absurdity of the situation. “Are you two really this competitive over me?”
Sirius and Regulus simultaneously looked at you like you’d just spoken Parseltongue. Then, as if on cue, they both turned their heads to stare at each other, their faces both hardening again.
“I just don’t want you getting distracted by someone else who can’t appreciate you the way I do,” Sirius said with a pointed look at his brother.
“I can appreciate her,” Regulus said smoothly. “Better than you think.”
You gave them both a side-eye. “Really? Because this doesn’t feel very appreciative.”
Sirius and Regulus froze, their competitive gazes turning to you, guilt flickering across their faces.
“Okay, okay,” Sirius said, slumping back down on the couch, his arms immediately wrapping around you. “I get it. I’ll chill. No more fighting for attention. Promise.”
“Fine,” Regulus muttered, but his eyes were still sparkling with mischief. “But don’t expect me to disappear just because Sirius wants you all to himself.”
You gave a small sigh, leaning into Sirius’s embrace. “I swear to Merlin, you two are impossible.”
Regulus gave an exaggerated bow, clearly not deterred. “I’m not impossible. I’m just more charming.”
Sirius snorted. “Charming? That’s rich coming from you.”
Before Regulus could retort, you decided it was time to end this chaos. “Alright, listen. You both want my attention? You’ve got it. But if you keep arguing about who gets the most of it, I’ll leave and go study with Remus instead.”
Both of them immediately froze.
“You wouldn’t do that,” Regulus said, wide-eyed.
“Try me,” you teased, a mischievous grin tugging at your lips.
Sirius’s arm tightened around you, and Regulus sighed dramatically. “Fine. We’ll share. But I’m warning you, Y/N, I’m a much better conversationalist than Sirius is.”
“Oh really?” Sirius raised an eyebrow, leaning in to plant a kiss on your temple. “How about we let her decide, huh?”
You smiled, glancing between them. “You both talk too much.”
With that, you snuggled deeper into Sirius’s side, feeling the brothers fall into an easy truce—if only for the moment.
Regulus rolled his eyes but leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest, watching the two of you with a smirk. “Lucky for you, Y/N, I’m a patient person.”
Sirius pulled you even closer, grinning. “Not as patient as I am.”
And just like that, the battle was on pause. For now.

what are your thoughts about aithusa? personally i love her way to much, but she rarely comes up in fandom discourse
HEY :D Thoughts about AIthusa, huh? I have many of those. Thoughts, I mean. In my brain. They like to swim around and create a whole mess of things sometimes.
I think the reason why Aithusa doesn't come up in fandom discourse often is because there isn't very much to say. Aithusa was born, then color coded as a sign for the golden future of Camelot and was then abandoned by Merlin. Tortured by a crazy guy. Then raised by Morgana and used to create the sword that later killed Arthur. Whenever they come up in fandom discouse, it's mostly about Merlin doing his job as Dragon Lord right or wrong. But you wanted my thoughts, so I'm gonna allow my head to spin weird shit around the ungendered Dragon. (That is why I will use they/them pronouns for Aithusa.) When it comes to Aithusa's name, not the canon translation, I mean what it literally means, it's hard to find, since they used old English for the language of magic, and I think Greek for the language of the Dragon Lords (which doesn't necessarily have to apply to the Dragon names) and I haven't seen anyone make a post about it. All I get from Google translate is "Hey you" in Gaelic and that's a bit useless. Or well, this:

The automatic language recognition in Google would let me interpret Aithusa as a gift to the world. Or Arthur, depending on your shipping interests. Or, you know, if I could make up the Old English maybe pseudo-parts of the word (the writers were very lazy in BBC Merlin, they are literally quoting Beowulf when Merlin magics the blue ball in the poisoned chalice.). Something fitting I found in my old English dictionary is agan, meaning to possess, and to own, and thus (spelled with a thorn which my keyboard doesn't have) meaning as follows. So, in my absolutely amateurish and interpretational, and way too far reaching ways, I would say Aithusa could mean: A(gan) thus (a): To own the future.
(Again, you asked for my thoughts, this is not canon and probably pointless, I just needed to go down this route first.)
In the fandom wiki, we find THESE informations on Aithusa.

So, things we do know are very few
Aithusa is a baby
Aithusa was tortured and is therefore crippled
Aithusa cannot talk
Aithusa probably has Stockholm Syndrom because of Morgana
But you know, I think it's very interesting to know that Aithusa is the Light of the Sun, the literal sign for a Golden Future and that very sign can be hurt by a mere human. Not only does this mean that humans can kill Dragons (the Dragon lore doesn't make any sense, I swear to god) but it's also meant to be symbolism. Merlin, just like Arthur, is shown to be his own doom through Aithusa. They are hidden, tortured, kept from living their truth, abandoned by everyone who should be leading and protecting them.
With Aithusa being born it means that at that point, Merlin had already fulfilled his destiny. At this point in time, the golden age is already there and it should have been a sign for Merlin to speak up about his magic. He never did, that's why Aithusa remains mute. And just like magic itself, when harmed or in danger, Aithusa can easily be used for evil.
Apart from the symbolism and their part in Arthur's death, Aithusa doesn't contribute much to the story, I think. Yes, they console Morgana and they are like the continuation of the Dragon lineage, but that's ultimately pointless. Aithusa will be, inevitably, be the last Dragon. Which is honestly really cruel, but again, parallel to Merlin himself. That's where Aithusa's arc ends, unfortuntaley. Personally, knowing all that, I find Aithusa hard to use as the character they are in canon. With what little defines their character, you have to ultimately change everything about them to use them in fun fics and comics and stuff. That's why they end up as a little dog creature so often.
Don't get me wrong, I love Aithusa. But I love FANON Aithusa, just like I prefer fanon Sir Leon over canon Sir Leon. Because fanon Aithusa is like a domesticated chicken that Merlin keeps in his rooms or fights custody over with Morgana while Arthur is either oblivious, supportive, or being gaslit. But maybe I am overlooking a lot of things. So, if any of you like to disagree or add anything to my points, feel free to engage ^^

Do think sel is jealous of valec
[spoilers for legendborn and bloodmarked, read at your own caution ;)] im hella late in answering anon this is in my drafts for like days and i forgot this one was asked I'm so sorryyy and i also don't have my tablet rn so i cant ss the specific parts but nvm imma just quote them
oh absolutely haha he's hella hella jealous and I've got proofs
so the main one where sel alsolutely is jealous
Sel shakes his head. “Don’t listen to him, Briana. He’s trying to convince you he has use here. He’s made up some reason to give you information, hoping it’ll turn into a debt you owe him.” Valec’s had enough. “You getting close to the edge again, kingsmage? Jumping to the worst-case scenario first. Assuming I want to tie Bree to me beyond the bounds of this conversation. Keep her for myself?” “Don’t you?” “Well,” Valec considers, smiling with not a small amount of fang. “Yes.” A minute tilt of Sel’s chin. “Watch yourself.” Valec’s smirk blooms wide. “The difference between you and me, Kane, is that I am a transparent sort, who’s happy to say out loud all that I desire.” Brown eyes flicker to red and back. “You want the same, you just can’t come out and say it. Not really.” Sel’s answer is a stunned silence. William flushes pink, and Alice looks downright disgusted.
i would also love to point out that sel was silent but William blushed. now i am so so so sure that their talk in the car on their way to volition?? bro i wanna know what they talked about because William sure as hell knows what sel and bree have going on, he definitely does. he's gonna be the kenji here i swear.
also, the balcony scene yall asdfghjkl like who's gonna say he's not jealous he is two steps away from killing valec whenever he says shit like that lmaooo
"Merlin's thoughts were harder and sharper than my own. Vicious in their clarity." Sel grimaces. "I wonder if it is because, unlike me, he was a half-human, half-demon... just like-" "Just like Valec." The tension in Sel's jaw tells me that my guess is right. Nick looks between us. "Who's Valec?" Sel's expression sours. "A rogue cambion and demon power broker with Rootcrafter ties." Nick's brow furrows. "Is he after Bree?" "Depends on how you define 'after'," Sel drawls. "Valec isn't trying to kill me," I clarify for Nick. "So that's refreshing." Sel snorts. "Valec flirts with you enough that it might kill me." Nick's eyes widen. "A demon power broker flirts with you?" He turns to Sel. "Who does this guy think he is?" "I can handle Valec," I say, rolling my eyes. "He is half demon, and apparently the balance makes him at peace with his demon side."
also the fact that nick said nothing about selwyn's feelings about someone flirting with bree. idk if this is poly confirmation or the fact that nick's plan includes him going somewhere and leaving bree and sel together but yall this is hilarious
#bro is literally fuming every moment how is this not jealousy#even nick laughed it off man#if/when they're revealed as brothers#god its gonna be chaos#the legendborn cycle#legendborn cycle#legendborn#tracy deonn#bloodmarked#oathbound#selwyn kane#team sel#selwyn emrys kane#selbree#sel x bree#breesel#brelwyn#bree x sel

group ask for lost fics #45
Hi y’all! Below are a few lost fics that us mods just can’t seem to find. That being said, we’re hoping that you lovely followers are able to help! If anyone knows any of the fics below please reply below if you know of a fic!
Note: previous group asks and all lost fics!
Anon 1 asked:
I’ve looked for this particular fic for a long time now, but it was a modern day Christmas fic in which Merlin and Arthur are together and Uther disapproves <<>> I can’t quite remember specifics other then Arthur being jelly of Merlin dating someone else? Or something to that effect anyway long story short they wind up together in the end and Uther gets past his bias X’D I’m sad to see you guys go, but I’m so grateful for all the fic recs that have been left <33333
Anon 2 asked:
hi! thank you so much for all your hard work over the years and helping to keep this fandom alive, ive got a lost fic. i dont remember much but there was a noble of some kind who was mistreating servants and he tried to mistreat gwen and merlin stepped in for her and then arthur came to save the day. thank you !! <3
miraniel asked:
Combed all the tags I could think of & still can't find this fic, worried it's deleted: Merlin, Gwen & Gwaine r captured by bandits/minions looking for Emrys. Merlin casts a protection spell on Gwen before they're caught. Evil sorcerer tries to take Emrys's power by absorbing it into a (staff? crystal?) but absorbs Merlin's soul too. Rest of fic is about getting M's soul back in his body. At one point, he & Arthur share a body. I think Kilgarrah fixes them in the end. Ty SO much! Love this blog!
Anon 3 asked:
hello! do you perhaps know what fic those quotes are from? do you know how much i love you? do you know that i would do anything for you, anything at all? crown and kingdom and anything ever promised to me, i’d give it up, i’d give it all up—tell me, do you know? / and arthur loves him, he loves him so much that he fears his chest will splinter open and spill all of it into the space between them.
Anon 4 asked:
there was this fic i read some while back where merlin was a royal, and arthur and merlin were like bffs. i think arthur was the head knight?? there was a particular scene were merlin got a dragon tattoo on his back. i wonder if you might know which fic this is? thank u so much
the-tortoise-lady asked:
Hi :D I adore you people!! I'm looking for a fic set in Camelot, where Merlin is hurt (I think it was something with his leg? Not sure tho) and then Arthur spends a lot of time with Merlin, caring for him a bit? And there's one moment I remember when he's reading to Merlin and they're all cuddled up on some sort of sofa and there's a lot of emotions and feels? And fire in the fireplace? It's definitely Merlin/Arthur I think, I guess there also were some love confessions? I just sadly can't seem to find it.. I know that I read it on ao3 I hope you can find it (no pressure tho please!!) Lots of love and appreciation and a big thank u from me :)
Anon 5 asked:
Hi, I hope you have a nice day :) I've scoured the internet and also your page for this specific fanfic that I read a while back. Essentially Arthur finds out about Merlin's magic and holds him at swordpoint. They stand right next to a cliff and Merlin startles which makes him fall off. Merlin then discovers his own immortality, when he wakes up at the bottom of the cliff. But him being kept alive does not mean he is healed of his injuries. He puts himself back together for months down there if I remember correctly. The druids show up to help at a certain point I think. Please help me, I loved that fic so much :(
thelady-mary asked:
Hello, I just wanted to say that I'll miss this blog DEARLY and everything you guys did here, it means a lot to me, truly. Ok, so I've ADHD and I can't describe things for shit so I'll put the fanfic I'm looking for as a list. 1- it was some sort of 5+1 type, with multiple chapters, I remember that includes some jealousy and he knows about the magic. It was like Arthur was learning little things about Merlin that he started to love. 2- the things that he learn (and what I remember) was: Merlin's body hair grows really fast and he said that Gaius believe it was an outlet for his magic, they're traveling and M forgot his blade (the thingy that shaves beard) and he has this beautiful beard and long wavy hair by the end of the week, when they come back A is occupied with stuff and didn't saw M all day, but at the end he's back with short hair again saying that Gwen and George helped him with his chores so he could get a hair cut and shave; also A talks about how he recently learn that dyes are expensive and wants to know how M have such a colourful wardrobe and he says he only have two tunics because his mom helped a merchant out once and he gave her two pieces of fabric with she made the tunics and his neckerchiefs; Merlin knows how to write beautifully, calligraphy and all, M gets sick in this part and they communicate via little notes send it via George who told A that he was hesitaning into giving him M's note on the beginning because he thought it was improper, A keeps one that says "I believe in you" because he needs it emotionally; Merlin can compose music and he did compose and wrote an entire play (or just one song, I don't remember much), he dedicated one song to Arthur. 3- Arthur makes an announcement talking about love and union, looking directly at Merlin, hoping that he would understand that it was more or less about his feelings for him. 4- the song dedicated to Arthur it was about a Knight falling in love with his servant (and I believe running away with him, but don't quote me on that) 5- Arthur believes that the song is about Lance and Merlin's relationship, since is about a knight and not a King, and decided to go after him thinking his heart belongs to another. 6- Merlin confess that he wrote the song dedicated to him and ask what he thought about it, but Arthur is still under the wrong assumption and says that he liked the "song about the boat" better. 7- Merlin is devastated and I remember Arthur seeing him with Lancelot, with him giving him comfort 8- I don't remember how, but they confess to one another and have a little fight over the song part. And this is all I remember, I'm sorry if is really big or even impossible, but I'm desperate.
Anon 6 asked:
Hello! First of all, thank you for the years you've spent helping so many of us with finding fics, it really is very appreciated. Now, I've been wondering whether to ask or not for help with finding this fic for a while, but knowing you're going to soon close it up made me get over my shyness and just ask. The fic has Gwaine, Merlin and Arthur out doing... Something, and Merlin is forced to use his magic. Gwaine takes the fall, and Arthur banishes him to the nearby kingdom. I specifically remember Gwaine hugging Merlin and making him notice thar Arthur only drew out his sword after thinking it wasn't Merlin the sorcerer. The next part (I can't remember if it was a new chapter or a new part, sorry) has Arthur needing a sorcerer's help to decurse a land, I think, so the the knights of the round table all go to retrieve Gwaine. He and Merlin try to keep the lie up a bit, but then the truth comes out. That's all I remember, I hope it's enough. Thank you a
As always, this post will be updated if/when any fics are found!

Merlin Loregasm Rewatch S1E4
Hi Everyone! Welcome to my rewatch of Merlin focusing on the lore. I am a giant nerd so pretty excited about this. We're on THE POISONED CHALICE
OKAY so @catsconflictscopicsandchamomile our resident Old English expert explained to me something really interesting. the spell used by Nimueh draws its power from the Spear-Danes, the semi pagan culture featured in Beowulf (Who had their own lake lady in Grendel's mother who was likely a priestess of the old religion And linguisticly called Disir) There is more though The first lines of the spell also seem to be Nimue saying she owes her magic to the spear Danes (that Grendel the monster in Beowolf ate) At this point I'm wondering if its meant to establish she is saying HEY MY SPELLS ARE PAGEN This will not be the only Beowulf reference in this episode. (Its never referenced or quoted after this episode) I'm wondering if the translators threw this in as a joke or easter egg Or in my freind's words "fuck it. lets canonize Beowulf in this universe real fast" (Okay I just discovered one of their choices I'll talk about later and HOLY FREAKING SHIT)
Mercia is traditionally thought of as a kingdom formed during the anglo-saxon settlement of Britain (Which occurs post Merlin acoirding to Merlin having saxons of enemies in later seasons) The historic king Arthur if he existed was said to have fought against the anglo saxons but this is just a footnote as we are focusing on Merlin Universe) HOWEVER a 13th century text says "“Pagans came from Germany and occupied East Anglia, that is, the country of the East Angles; and some of them invaded Mercia, and waged war against the British.”
British here being Original pre-saxon inhabitents. SO it is possible that a Mercia existed before The Anglo-Saxons. This could also be the Historian using the name he knows. Bayard is not a recorded later King of Mercia either so good choice in name if we want him to be a Britonic king from a Mercia founded before the Anglo-Saxons apear. Fun fact Mercia also resisted leaving paganism longer than any other Anglo-Saxon kingdom! BUT Anyway in Merlin Mercia is a thing, Its ruled by Bayard, and its color is blue. It would be in the midlands of England most likely.
Also he was at war with Camalot, but now is not. I wonder if that has to do with Uther having not inherited but taking over the kingdom! Uther: The treaty we sign today marks an end to war and the beginning of a new friendship between our peoples
I also think Uther as a peacemaker is interesting, especially as we see this more than once. It might be why some people view him as "A good king."
So this at first glance SEEMS like it hints more toward paganism. Beltane is a Gaelic May Day festival. But its renamed version May Day was not exactly Christianized. See most other big Gaelic festivals (usually religious) Were kinda taken over by Christianity when it came. Yule became Christmas Samhain became All Saints Day (All Hollows Eve) ETC. Beltane was also celebrated in some places ALONG with Christianity until the 1800s. (Scotland did this specifically) In modern times Beltane is VERY Pagan. And it is very possible this hints further toward the Camalot is pagan or just nonreligious side of the entire debate. (Despite people using words like god or hell.) But it's not quite as conclusive as many other type of references would be.
(For context despite it saying we've Arthur here is talking about Merlin, who just announced his cup was poisoned, exclusively which is interesting!) See slow gin is a type of alcohol made with juniper berries and blackthorn fruits. It was traditionally brewed (With a lot of home brewing) in October and November and used as a warming drink in the depths of winter. AS you can tell this episode does not take place in winter. I think there are two possibilities for Arthur picking this drink specifically to mention despite that. The first is that as a prince perhaps the drink is available to him year round if he wants it and he doesn't know that is not true of most people yet. The second is he is so panicked at the prospect of the trouble Merlin is in his mind latched on to the first drink that popped into it.
Okay, so Mort means death in Latin. And the ending suffix here Usually makes the word an adjective from proper or place names BUT often appears in flower naming. So basically this plant is named The "Death Flower" Flower or "Capital D Deathly" Flower
Gaius: it can only be found in the caves deep beneeth the forest of Baloch The flower grows on the roots of the Mortaeus tree.
Uh okay. THERE IS SOME SHIT GOING DOWN with this plant. First of all, flowers growing from the roots of a tree is just weird. flowers are basically there to attract things to pollinate a plant usualy. If a tree has flowers they do not grow from the roots. Second of all its kinda weird for flowers or trees to grow in DEEP caves. Sunlight cannot read them there. I would give it a pass if it did not say deep because if there were cracks in the ceiling of the cave that could put light though. It does kinda explain why they can ONLY be found there though. If its so odd and specialized it might be the only place it can grow.
This flower is either innately magical in some odd way or does not conform to evolution. So at this point I am pretty sure it was bred/engineered/magiced into being but some sorcerer. Likely specifically for poisoning people. and that person wanted to limit the people who knew of it and thus kept it in once set of caves. BUT SOMHOW news got out about it. Ok so I also looked up Baloch. In Welsh it can mean dig or sorry. In Irish it means boy and in scottish the same thing. So no info to be gleaned from that
Gauis: A cockatrice-- it guards the forest. Its venom is extremely potent, a single drop would mean certain death. OK first of all I'm doubling down on there being some past sorcerer, Because they were FOR SURE using these as guard dogs. Second of all I LOVE Merlin paying fast and loose with magical creatures from folklore because I can too in my fics A Cockatrice in folklore was a monster created when a toad or snake egg was hatched beneath a chicken. It could kill with a look, or a breath, or a touch, and was basically a two-legged dragonish creature with a rooster head. In the Merlin world it is very diferant. We'll see one soon! "Few who have crossed the mountains of Isgard in search of the Moraeus flower have made it back alive." Yeah can't find any meaning behind the name Isgard! BUT HAVE I MENTIONED I THINK A SORCER ONCE LIVED IN THE CAVES/FOREST.
Okay I think this is a reference to the actual historical job of taster. Basically important people (ESP royalty) would hire someone to taste all their food before thay ate it. That way if it was poisoned the taster would die instead of them. It was viewed as a pretty plum gig because poisoning didn't often happen (ESP if people knew there was a taster) and the taster got to eat REALLY good food and get paid for it. I think its also an interesting character detail that while this kinda implies that Uther might have someone (At least for his private food and not banquets) We see multiple times that Arthur in fact does NOT. It is quite possible he managed to put his foot down and get out of this somehow because he believes it to be wrong. Which not gonna lie is a very Arthur thing to do.
(Context: Arthur talking about how Gaius said they can save Merlin if they get the leaf so it is not a fools errand) Waiiit is this trying to imply that Gaius was the one who brought up the idea that one could use the old religion to give Uther a son? I mean we knew he was the messenger. but HOLY SHIT. And if that is true, Uther somhow forgave him? Why would Uther forgive him? The only thing I can think is if Gaius talked about how magic had tricked him and gave Uther something else to blame. This is all conjecture though. Uther could be referring on how Gaius is close to Merlin or something else. It just feels like it might be a nod at what all went down around Arthur's birth.
Okay so this is Merlin quoting Beowolf here. A Poem that is yet to be written down but might have had some oral tradition and actually takes place at the traditional time Arthur is said to have lived. Merlin is basically talking about how Arthur/Beowolf is endowed with honnor. This happens right after Arthur decides to ride out to save Merlin.
Magic Rule Established: Potions/Poisons can be more potent if magic is used in their preperation
Okay MORE Beowolf
Merlin says Arthurs name then basically talks about a young man doing good deeds.
Playing hard and fast as I said. LOOK Dinosaur!
Okay so more Beowolf At this point I am 99.99% sure the people hired to write the spells at the time where having the time of their life. Let me explain
This line talks about gifts of treasure (the light) he conjuress to help Arthur. Fine. BUT then it mentions Arthur being under his father's protection. Expect Merlinto protectg him. The spell writers used a freaking old english poem to let Merlin call himself Arthur's "daddy" I am not sure what I am expected to do with this knowledge. (It might have been chosen so they could use the next line of the spell but THEY DID NOT HAVE TO DO THIS) The next line (Which is actually also the next line in the poem) says something about how so that when Arthur is older his companions can stand with him when war comes.
Okay so yeah turns out there is no tree or roots. I'm chalking this up to he said she said. STILL GOING WITH THE SORCERER.
OKAY so it a potion is made using magic the antidote may ALSO need magic
Oh look our first hint Merlin is immortal. I find his brand of immortality intersting. HE CAN DIE he just comes back after a bit.

Read: the Bridge Between Arthurian Chronicle and Romance
"I know not if you have heard tell the marvellous gestes and errant deeds related so often of King Arthur. They have been noised about this mighty realm for so great a space that the truth has turned to fable and an idle song. Such rhymes are neither sheer bare lies, nor gospel truths. They should not be considered either an idiot's tale, or given by inspiration. The minstrel has sung his ballad, the storyteller told over his story so frequently, little by little he has decked and painted, till by reason of his embellishment the truth stands hid in the trappings of a tale. Thus to make a delectable tune to your ear, history goes masking as fable."
So I've always been interested in medieval Welsh legend and the late antique history it relates to, of which early Arthuriana is part, which has given me the odd perspective of someone who can tell you all about fragmentary 10th-century poetry but has a pretty shaky grasp on the concept of "Lancelot". I've been wanting to finally check out the 'mainstream' tradition, but being me, I've decided to do so by tracing the chronological development into the famous chivalric romances. So the first step consists of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae, supplemented by his Vita Merlini and glances at parts of Wace's Roman de Brut and William of Malmesbury's Gesta Regum Anglorum.
For such a foundational text, the HRB (for the uninitiated: the text that took the Welsh folk-hero Arthur and made him famous on the continent) forms a really interesting transitional point; it's not quite like what comes before or after it. Living in an age when we're thoroughly disabused of the notion that it can be treated as history in any way, I think it's easy to appreciate him as an incredibly inventive fantasy writer; I was extremely captivated by the earliest parts, depicting an ancient Britain of Trojans, giants, temples to Greek gods, warrior queens and wizard kings. (And the Life of Merlin I thought had a lot of fun storyteller's panache.)
The Spanish giant-slaying interlude before the war with Rome I thought was really interesting--you can see the story palpably shift gears from the pseudohistorical, chronicle strand of the tradition to the folkloric one. Suddenly we leave the army behind and go on a buddies adventure with Cai and Bedwyr where we fight a monster and explain some place-names!
I dragged my feet for a bit getting to Roman de Brut, the vernacular French translation of HRB from a couple decades later, on account of I'd just read the same story so it was repeating myself somewhat. The online availability of it sort of 'helped' in that respect, in that it only had the section from Vortigern through to Camlann. And...Fiiiiiiine, I guess Wace does have a knack for bringing out the human drama of each event to make it more human story and less chronicle, I guess he's a talented writer and I can see how this helped popularise Geoffrey's version among a variety of social circles or WHATEVER
I do still prefer HRB leaning into the anachronism to create this interesting historical fantasy world very invested in merging different ideas of the ancient past; Wace is kind of just writing the past like his own high medieval present, which is less interesting even if the character drama is all much sharper. Albeit that's not surprising, given that this is the missing link that got us mainstream Arthuriana taking place in a 6th century Britain that strongly resembles high to late medieval France. And I'm not against that! I think I'll vibe more with that setting when we're doing questing adventures in this timeless milieu, rather than there being these discernible elements of Romano-British pseudohistory playing out.
Wace also furnishes us with the quote at the start of this post; it's really fascinating to see this kind of engagement with the hazy area between history and myth we're working with as early as the mid-12th century. (And he also gives us an extremely strong flash of Kay/Bedevere, thank you for the food)
I also incidentally happened to find out that William of Malmesbury's Gesta Regum Anglorum came out ten years before the HRB--I'd disregarded other chronicles since for this period they're mostly dependent on the late antique/early medieval stuff I'm already well familiar with (Gildas, Bede, "Nennius"), but taking a quick glance at William's Arthurian mentions, it's very interesting that this close to Geoffrey he specifically frames him as not a king; rather as a warrior who "helped" the king Ambrosius--it seems to me he's taking Bede (who in turn draws on Gildas) as his basis and synthesising in stuff from the Historia Brittonum (not to be confused with HRB, earlier 9th century text, less narrative, first securely-dated mention of Arthur) where it doesn't conflict with Bede (using Bede's Ambrosius rather than HB's, but slotting in HB's Arthur underneath him). Point is, it seems he was still in an intermediary state right up until the mid-1100s, between the 9th century "definitely not a king" and the HRB confirming him as "definitely a king", where you could plausibly get away with presenting him as either.
William also mentions Gwalchmai/Gawain ("Walwin") and Arthur's prophecied return, interesting elements directly from the folklore to see in a non-Welsh source pre-Geoffrey.
Anyway! Next I will finally be reading the first generation of romances, however I can get ahold of the Chretien de Troyes stuff. (Maybe other stuff from around the same time like Marie de France and Beroul?)

Hogwarts Legacy Incorrect Quotes Part 4 (feat. my Hufflepuff!MC, Ellie)
Sebastian: Dear Diary, my teen angst bullshit now has a body count.
***
[At some point in the beginning of the game. Let's pretend that teachers are concerned with bullying]
Professor Weasley: What would you do if one of your classmates viciously teased you again and again?
Ellie: Oh, that’s easy. I’d take a quill—
Professor Weasley: To write something to your teacher?
Ellie: —make sure that it’s really sharp, and ram it into their eye at full tilt! Leander always says the quill is mightier than the sword because they can’t outlaw bringing quills to school!
Professor Weasley: *internal screaming*
***
Sebastian: I have yet to encounter a problem where an Unforgivable Curse didn't factor into the solution at least in some way.
Anne: This is why uncle doesn't fucking love you!
***
Ellie: You really put aside everything and came all this way for me? How did you even get here so fast?
Leander: Several school rules violations.
Ominis: Three counts of using my relations.
Garreth: Roughly thirteen vials of my latest experiment.
Imelda: Also, I used the enchanted bludgers to hurry them up.
***
[MC keeps using her friends to break into Ravenclaw common room]
Ravenclaw knocker: What is a dream?
Ominis: Dream - the first thing people abandon when they learn how the world works.
[the door opens]
Ellie: That's too dark, edgelord.
***
[After Astronomy lesson]
Garreth: Ellie has no survival skills, her need to win has replaced them.
Amit: That can't be true!
Garreth: Watch this.
Garreth: Hey Ellie, race you to the bottom of the stairs!
Ellie: *jumps from Astronomy tower*
***
[After she and Poppy freed a dragon]
Leander: What in Merlin's name is wrong with you??
Ellie: What? No good morning?
Leander: Good morning, what in Merlin's name is wrong with you??
***
[The squad gathers in the Room of Requirement]
Ellie: Alright, listen up you psychos.
Ellie: Not you, Amit. You’re an angel and we’re thrilled you’re here.
***
[In the goblin mines]
Ellie: We have fun, don’t we, Amit?
Amit: I have never been more stressed out in my entire life.
***
Ellie: We are not mad, Sebastian. We are just disappointed.
Ominis: No, we are mad.
Ellie: Yes. We are. We are livid. But we are going to let this one slide.
Ominis: No, we’re not!
Ellie: I am not a mind reader, Ominis!
***
Duncan: Everett, Ellie keeps bullying me, what should I do?
Everett: Ask a teacher for help.
[The next day…]
Duncan, to Professor Ronen: Will you help me beat up Ellie?
***
Professor Weasley: Godric's heart, how would you explain this kind of crude behaviour?
Sebastian: I'm gonna have to say verbally.
Ellie: Because judging by that tone of voice...
Garreth: ... You might not be in the mood for the dance performance we've prepared.
***
Ellie: That has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.
Amit: For the benefit of everyone present, I will clarify this is not a challenge.
Sebastian, Poppy, Natty & Garreth: Awww...
***
Ellie *going on another quest*: If there's going to be a big dramatic scene, wait until I get back.
Poppy: Of course, I can't flip this table by myself.
***
[AU where Leander and Ellie are the ones who fight a troll in Hogsmeade]
Ellie: Just stay calm! You already have everything you need to beat it!
Leander: The power to believe in myself!?
Ellie: No, you already know Diffindo! Slash it!
***
Sebastian: Am I going to far?
Ominis: No, no, no. You went too far about 2 weeks ago. Now you’re going to Azkaban.
***
Ellie: *sneaking in Hufflepuff common room late at night*
Poppy: *sitting on a sofa and casting Lumos* You want to tell me where you've been all night?
Ellie: I was stargazing with Amit?
Amit: *sitting on another sofa and also casting Lumos* Wanna try again?
***
Ellie: I have so much energy, I want to compete with Imelda or commit a petty felony... which should I do?
Leander: Please don’t get arrested.
Ellie: No promises!
Sebastian: Why not both? Get creative!
Ellie: Wonderful suggestion, thank you.
Leander: Please don’t encourage her, Sebastian.
***
Amit: Small creatures are much more vicious because they have a smaller body to bottle up all their emotions.
Everett: Ridiculous. Give me some examples.
Duncan: Puffskeins?
Samantha: Cornish pixies?
Ellie *chilling in Ravenclaw common room*: Chomping Cabbages.
***
[the Squad at flying lesson]
Garreth, Leander, and Amit: *flying normally, enjoying the view and talking*
Imelda, Poppy, and Ellie: *flying past them, as fast as they can, chasing Duncan who is screaming*
***
Poppy: Could you at least try to see this from my perspective?
Natty: *crouches down*
Imelda: *kneels down*
Ellie: *sits on the floor*
Poppy: ...
Poppy: I hate all of you.
***
Ellie: *falls down the stairs*
Amit: Are you okay?
Leander: Stop falling down the stairs!
Duncan: How’d the ground taste?
Ellie: *getting up like nothing happened*
Ellie: *releases Chomping Cabbages*

Okay I need the scream my theory about Dreamlight Valley after being semi caught up.

Talking about potentially spoilery stuff under the cut. I know, not my usual Satoru gushing but he is in my head encouraging me to ramble
Storybook Vale theory: After finishing the main scenario quests, we find out that Maleficent and Hades' big ole feud wasn't the reason that the Neverafter was happening. Next thing we know, Maleficent get vanished on the tile that has Aurora's face on it from when we get the Royal Net. The Lorekeeper, the book on the pedestal, in the library, claimed that this feud was why the Neverafter was happening--which makes me suspicious. Hades and Maleficent both confirmed the inkies were forming BEFORE their fight, which begs the question on what Maleficent knew before she got vanished. Plus, as we find scattered pages of Aurora's journals, one of them is, quote:
"Whenever I visit the Lorekeeper, I sense her pages are full of secrets she is keeping from us all. Could it be that she is trying to protect us from unhappy endings?"
Which, you would think, doesn't sound all bad, does it? But another entry of Aurora's said she asked the Lorekeeper about going to the heart of the Vale, to which the Lorekeeper got upset with her for even bringing it up. Once I reread through the entries I found (I'm missing two or three, which may have even more clues) after finishing the main scenario quest, it's leaving me to suspect that the Lorekeeper is the reason the inkies are showing up and she was trying to cast blame to Maleficent and Hades' feud to get everyone off her scent. Like, just to itch your brains, let me pose it as such below:
Why did the Lorekeeper get cross with Aurora for asking about how to get to the heart of the Vale while the Neverafter is happening, when the whole point is to stop it and trying to find whatever clue we can? Is it because the heart of the Vale is a dangerous place...or is that where the Lorekeeper is hiding her secret?
What are the Unwritten Realms and why haven't we found any way there yet? Because according to Aurora's journal entries, that's where she disappeared to and no one's seen her since. Which begs the question: is the Unwritten Realms actually the heart of the Vale...or someplace else entirely, like the Here and There?
Who is the Lorekeeper, really? When we meet her, she is a weakened, fairly jovial book that allows us to reorder the stories of Disney movies like Mulan, Hercules, Moana, Encanto, etc because her snippets got released. She also states she's an old friend of Merlin's, which causes some players to suspect she's Madame Mim. But that still remains to be seen...
Basically where I'm going with this is: whether intentionally or not, I theorize the Lorekeeper is the reason the Neverafter is happening.
Also as an unrelated note:

whoever selfships with Jack, I found yo boney man in a tree.

Ship ranking?? Uhhhh I want in!
The most random ships I have:
Mithian / Vivian, Mithian could turn out to be the one to free Vivian from the enchantment and make her into a better person!
Hunith /Uther or Ygraine / Balinor or Hunith /Ygraine etc etc. All the combinations
Gwaine / Elena I just think they're neat. They both have chaos energy. Plus, Elena's Father seems like a chill guy who would accept a peasant (who isn't actually a peasant huhhhhhhh)
Hear me out... Finna / Alator.
Nimueh / Freya
Julius Borden / Will
I swear I am not throwing these name out randomly there's a thought process behind it
Like Nimueh is of the old religion, so maybe she finds Freya after death in Avalon. And Freya being the kind soul she is can help her heal and grow out of her hatred.
And for Julius and Will... Picture a world where Will didn't die. And now everyone thinks he is a sorcerer. Julius hears rumours of the son of the last dragon lord living in Ealdor. So he goes there and he assumes it's Will, and Will just agrees to cover for Merlin, so he has to fake being a Dragon lord until the letter he sent reaches Merlin to warn him and to idk get help? But huh huh they actually fall in love.
Okay! There’s a lot here and I’m going to unpack all of them! This is fun!
Mithian / Vivian
I’m in favor of lesbian queens ruling a kingdom together, but also I like Mithian and feel she deserves better than Vivian. And I really dislike Vivian because she was mean to Gwen and I adore Gwen. I’m just not that interested in Vivian’s character, personally. I think Mithian, Gwen, and Morgana are all more interesting in her. So for that reason I rank it:
E-Tier
Hunith /Uther
No. Just no. Okay I know Uther was probably not always a genocidal maniac, but to quote Brennan Lee Mulligan “Before you were a fascist, you were a bully.” I think Hunith deserves to get her needs met by someone who would not one day gleefully send her son to the pyre. I rank this ship:
E-Tier
Ygraine / Balinor
Ohhhhh now this has some interesting vibes. Does Ygraine have a romance with Balinor before meeting Uther? Does she find out that Uther cheated on her, and got revenge on Balinor? Was it both? Does that mean that Uther and Ygraine were an arranged marriage? If so that makes Uther and even bigger hypocrite by using her death to justify his hatred.
For sheer implications and intrigue, I rank this:
C-Tier
Hunith /Ygraine
Ooooo a parallel to Arthur and Merlin, hell yes. I’m in favor of more sapphic romances in this fandom, and this could be fun. But also I now want an extremely cracky one shot where Merlin and Arthur are dating and introduce their moms, only for their moms to start hooking up, much to the horror of Merlin and Arthur.
I rank this:
C-Tier
Gwaine / Elena
I see this one a lot in the background of fics and I’m never much of a fan. It’s just a little too quirky for me. Like I’m sure there’s a fic out there that could get me to ship it, but most of the time it feels like people just want to ship the chaotic one with the chaotic one. It rarely feels thought out to me, and often feels like shoehorning it in because everyone needs to be a couple.
That said, it’s never enough to make me click away from a fic. And I could see how I would enjoy it if there was more time and thought put into their relationship. I mean, Gwaine is wandering rogue pre season 4. Chances are he ended up in Gawant at some point right?
I rank it:
C-Tier
For the potential
Finna / Alator
Tbh? In my soul, this is canon.
B-Tier
Nimueh / Freya
I just feel like Nimueh would trigger Freya. Super powerful, super scary, witch lady? After Freya got cursed dating Nimueh would just set Freya up to be terrified all the time. I don’t vibe with it. Also I think Freya has been through enough and doesn’t need to be fixing Nimueh.
I rank it:
D-Tier
Julius Borden / Will
Here’s the thing, I love Borden as a character but I like to make him Merlin’s shitty ex. I know the go to is Cenred, but he has way more chemistry with Borden.
So as far as shipping him with Will? Idk man. I’d maybe be tempted to read the fic you described because it sounds fun as hell, but Borden is just such a fun scummy piece of shit that I don’t ship him seriously with anyone. So without reading that fic, going on vibes alone…. I rank it:
D-Tier
Send me a Merlin Ship and I’ll rank it on a tier list. Note: This is a subjective ranking and a low ranking in no way means that I am shaming you for your taste in ships.
#bbc merlin#merlin#merlin bbc#mithian#princess mithian#gwaine#uther pendragon#king uther#bbc uther#hunith#balinor#merlin ship tier list#i am so sorry#I did not realize how low these would all be and now I feel bad 😬#I think our tastes don’t line up very well

word counted posted for last year: 90k... a feat (i wrote more but it was ofic so add like maybe 10k to that)
fandoms i wrote for: alex stern series, merlin, house md, pjo, spidey, hunger games, doctor who, & the grisha trilogy

work i'm most proud of (and why): thread of gold (arwen, bbc merlin) because i don't exactly post 2nd person fic and tbh most people HATEEEEE 2nd person fic AND i got people to enjoy it. HA!
work i'm least proud of (and why): coffee drinker (gen fic, bbc merlin) because it was just a promptfic and i didn't even really feel like posting it but i wrote it so i might as well yk?
share or describe a favorite review you received: any review that quotes a line but this one from judas kiss (arwen, bbc merlin)...
THIS. IS. WONDERFUL ❤️❤️❤️ *creates bookmark with gusto* I LOVE that you dug into what it might have been like for Gwen while she was under that enchantment! It was so creative to have her past memories blurring with glimpses of the present during the enchantment. I *felt* her disorientation, and it *hurt*. I felt so bad for Gwen all over again! 😭😭😭 That aspect of this story could have been a fantastic standalone one-shot in its own right, but noooo, you raised the bar and KEPT GOING and made it even better!!! I love that you showed Gwen and Merlin staying friends after Gwen becomes queen, and I love how she confides in him and how he immediately drops everything to go look for the offending piece of jewelry. The bit about Arthur’s incredulity at Merlin’s method of testing the enchantment was a great dash of humor, and I love that you fleshed out the concept of the enchantment to be something the others could experience so that they could truly *know* that Gwen had been innocent. And don’t even get me started on how much I love Arthur’s “Forgive me.” I love how he doesn’t think twice about humbling himself in front of everyone because his focus is solely on Gwen, consumed by the urgency of doing the right, honorable, and loving thing in that moment. You write Arthur and Gwen’s relationship so beautifully. 💕 Well done; I hate you (/affectionate) for all these feels. 🥰🫂👏
a time when writing was really, really hard: august through october... idek why i was literally in agony not writing
a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: writing jj in spider-man: homewrecker because i've NEVER written him before (in my memory) and i was like. Hello .
a favorite excerpt of your writing: cannae lie i have a few favs so... killing is a love language (mergana, bbc merlin) Heartbreak snakes up his throat, constricting him at the sight of her. Morgana’s beauty is incontestable even like this, but her hatred wore her down to her bones. Gone were the full cheeks and rosy lips, the perfectly combed hair, the wardrobe that would put princesses to shame. Now, her face is sunken in, her hair a curled storm, her dress is merely black rags at this point. thread of gold (arwen, bbc merlin) Your father’s presence is larger than life. Larger than love. It looms. It casts shadows long enough to hide every hope and dream you’ve ever had for yourself. the boy and the girl (malina, the grisha trilogy) Memory fractures into shards. Real or not real? There’s Mal in the meadow. Mal buried beneath the hanging tree. Mal cold in her palms. There’s a sky darker than night. Her hands bloodied. A knife lodged in his heart. Her knife. His blood. Her fault. She killed him. She loves him. Her fault. Rest her head on his still chest. Her fault. No heartbeat. Her fault. No warmth. Cold light spilling from her palms. She killed him. The Saint’s only true worshipper martyred.
how did you grow as a writer last year: my hopes from last year was that i finally finish a multichap fic.... 😭 does a short 3-shot count. besides that i wrote more consistently and i'm finally Used to my writing style. i think.
how do you hope to grow this year: hell if i know if i could write something longer than 20k that'd be great 😭😭😭😭
who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer, beta, cheerleader, etc.): the board.... @rosesau / @bipercabeth / @stellwood fnh...... i'd tag katie but she absconded from tumblr smh. anyway hi freaks n geeks
anything from your real life show up in your writing last year: oh i don't even know. nothing ig
any new wisdom you can share with other writers: bro idek the more i write the more writing becomes fundamentally so hard to talk about ... sorreeee
any projects you're looking to starting (or finishing) this year: IF I DON'T FUCKING MAKE PROGRESS ON MY PLAY I WILL BASH MY HEAD INTO A WALL. THIS CAN'T KEEP HAPPENING. ATLAS AND VIVIAN YOU WILL BE WRITTEN ON THE PAGE INSHALLAH
